This one is a little obvious, like the Barbarians, but the Cleric's main job is to heal and support a squad, providing them with quick and plentiful HP, and nice [sparkly] buffs. Although they specialize in healing, the rare Battle Cleric can do excellent, and surprising damage to a foe with their array of physical and magical spells.
I advise that clerics go with a pure magic build for optimal damage and healing power, or a light build, for more resilience and only slightly less healing/damage power.

Solo-healing:
Solo-healing is basically just keeping yourself alive while you're out on your own, questing or doing something cleric-y. First, a generally helpful tactic while fighting with a caster, is every Cleric should know how to kite, in case it is ever necessary.
Kiting is the act of running backwards [Also called "S-Kiting"] or away from a mob right after hitting it with an attack, usually involving a slow debuff. This gives the caster's skills a chance to cool down, and keeps them out of harm's way.
Now, for those who don't kite, or who get hit anyways, a quick-heal skill like Wellspring Surge is helpful. Hit yourself with one or two of these, and you're all set to go at another mob. An alternative to healing after every mob, is to heal before, simply by placing one or two Ironheart heals on yourself, and then attacking the mob. This should keep you alive throughout the battle.
Healing In a Squad:
Squads are vital for Clerics, as they are the support class of the game. To function properly as a support Cleric, one must know how to multi-task. You have to make sure everyone, especially the tank, is alive, buffed, and purified [free of any debuffs].
The only heal I will ever recommend to a support cleric while in squad is Ironheart. It is the most mana-efficient, and only stackable heal you will ever acquire. For casters, one or two hits from Ironheart and they'll be back to full health, and for tanks, a regulated, and well-timed set of Ironhearts will keep them at full while they tank.
Damage-Dealing:
For Battle Clerics, I would advise you to level your attacks, and solo-heals the most. Those are your priority. For physical mobs, simply use your magic skills, and for magic mobs, use your physical skills. It's very simple, and as I've seen before, considerably effective. You'll hit incredibly hard at higher levels [Most mobs and players are weak against Metal attacks, and all casters are weak against physical.] and will have the ability to save your own ass if you ever get in a pickle.
For further advice on Support Clerics, Cilice has proven on countless occasions that she is capable of keeping a full squad alive and in great shape, and can most likely give you hints and tips on how to build your character.
